‘The Natives Are Restless’: Junkanoo on Green Turtle Cay (I)

Every New Year’s Day on Green Turtle Cay, and across most of the major islands in the Bahamas, the year is brought in with a loud, colorful and ‘rambunctious’ carnival-like parade. After months of practice and costume pasting, this performance is just as fun to witness as it is to photograph.

Late to the stream of this year’s photos of the Green Turtle Cay Slammers’ ‘Welcome to the Bahamas’ themed Junkanoo are my own. This first set documents the moments before the locals began their march to bring in the New Year through the tiny streets of my hometown:
